Cape Verde - The Climate

On Cape Verde the sun shines on 350 days a year and the temperatures are between 21°C and 27°C. There is a constant breeze from the sea at a relatively low average humidity of 40 % to 60 %.

Instead of the classical four seasons on Cape Verde there are only two: the “tempo das brisas” (the time of the winds) from October to mid July and the “tempo das chuvas” (rainseason) from August to September where you can have some heavy topical rainfalls. Thefreshest months are January and February (average temperature of 21°C) where sometimes the temperature can fall to only 16°C, the warmest month is September (up to 36°C) with an average temperature of 27°C. In the night the temperature can fall 5°C.

The temperature of the water is always between 22°C and 27°C, and the North East trade wind which blows mostly in the “tempo das brisas” is loved especially by the surfers.

The islands of Barlavento (Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolao, Boa Vista, Sal, Santa Luzia, Branco and Razo) are always somewhat fresher than the islands of Sotavento (Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava) where it can get really hot in the summer.
